Chapter 1

Everyone has that feeling of dread. Like you know you if you could change something in your life you would. But only you can’t. That is how life is. Grace was a girl who had a troubled childhood and now 16 she will face the bloodiest battle in her lifetime. Reality. Blood. And loneliness. A life that you left in the dark. The only question is will she survive it.

“Get up!” A shout that roams the halls. Grace wakes up in alert but soon realizes the voice belongs to the orphanage owner. A bitter person. About the most bitter, mean, cold-blooded person that would walk the earth. The only thing about this place that was decent was the other kids and the kind workers. The workers she would describe: People who had a sad life and had nothing better to do than make the best of it so when they die they die with a clear conscience. But that is what Grace believed what brought them to this dump.

“Grace! Come on, you don’t wanna get in trouble. You know

what happened last time.” Mica whispers in the door frame. I laugh, a five year old girl telling me what to do. Though we are practically sisters. I was nine when she arrived. She was a scrawny thing. A little newborn on the streets. She is lucky she even survived, let alone found before death came upon her. But she is right. I was thrown in a basement for a week with only a water bottle and five tomatoes. I hated tomatoes but I was forced to eat them since it was my only chance of survival. All because I didn’t show up. Strict they are, but what I know is they are forced to keep their jobs. Again sad people are desperate enough to take this wretched job.

Mica wanders the halls with thousands of other children walking to the main room. A room placed with thousands of chairs each for each orphan. One for each orphan that would be soon humiliated. “Mica come here!” I yell for her. I can spot her starless

black hair moving through the crowd. She glances on her tippy toes to try to see me. “Mica!” I yell over everyone's voices that roam the halls. “Coming, coming!” She yells back. She is small enough to travel through everyone without anyone noticing. I stand still waiting but she takes forever. I no longer see her. “Grace! Help!” She screams. I see a tall and stocky man walking faster than everyone and stop to turn a different direction. With Mica on his shoulders. “Mica!” I yell rushing through everyone. Her voice goes silent and once I see the room another man pushes me to stay on my current path.

“Mica! Mica! Where are you!” I yell. No answer and before I know it I have a cloth around my mouth. Suffocating me, I pass out. I wake up in the chairs. Everyone has a cloth over their mouth now. They all look panicked. Mica is in front of everyone and her eyes spot mine. “Mica!” I try to yell but I am too muffled for anyone to hear. The man smacks her when she tries to scream. Her hair flies and her head faces down. Her hair covering her face. “NO!” I scream muffled. Everyone goes quiet when he yells. The owner of this horrible place.

“You may know me as the owner. But today I am nothing. They are the new owners and I made sure they will make everything 10 times more horrible. So you're welcome.” He says and walks to the middle where Mica stays, still. And grins in the most evil way. “We had a change of plans.” A man says emerging from the dark. He looks back and already seems to know what happened, or what changed. “No! Please!” He yells running but is punched and falls. Blood flows out his mouth.
